My father's stories expanded my horizons long before I first boarded an airplane. He spun tales for me of war in Japan and the South Pacific; of the ever-present threat of the enemy; and of fights among servicemen that began on one side of a ship and ended on the other. His favorite was of how he met my mother. I wanted to include dad's story in this song about their lives.

Lyrics

on a train
in a southern state
a soldier offered a belle
the seat next to him
to show his thanks
the soldier gave the belle
a shiny red apple

and decades later
the Bell was still a belle
she smiled and blushed
as her soldier told the tale
of how it all began
of how it all began
of how it all began
years ago

of all the changes
they witnessed and endured
of all the love that they shared
of all the people
they met and encouraged
a soldier and a belle
this is their story

make no mistake
the road wasn’t always smooth
they had their ups and downs
I am living proof
that their love did survive
it withstood the test of time
survived the scrutiny
of all those around
survived mistakes that they made
survived to give hope
to a little girl
and this boy

a soldier and a belle
a soldier and a belle
a soldier and a belle
this is their story

a soldier and a belle
a soldier and a belle
a soldier and a belle
this is their story
